Flying Low by algenpfleger Flying Low by algenpfleger
this is a quicker painting I did a couple of days ago, looked at it again and thought I might upload it. I did a couple of helicopter studies last week (gonna put em on my blog later I think) and one of a UH-60 the day before this one, and then went and tried to do stuff from imagination to test how much I picked up from the studies and the strengthen my ability to do stuff without refs too. This is something I try to do from time to time, breaking things down, understanding them, to then be hopefully able to do shit from head. There's two separate components in that, media control and actual content, I'm kinda thinking about that a bit so I hope I'll be able to collect some coherent things to talk about in a livestream! Don't wanna just sit there and be all like "Uhm... now I'm uhh... doing this."

For the smoke I just made a new document, made a round lasso selection, airbrushed the edge a bit and then made a brush from that, some shape dynamics settings for random size and roundness and then just made the black smoke and then went over it with a lighter color with the brush.

I really like the painting, but the heli's shape seems off. A UH-60 has more of a curve along the main section of the aircraft, right not it seems too boxy.

GREAT job on the smoke. I like the lighting on the chopper. in flight sims, i tend to avoid helicopters, something about throttle for takeoff being messed up...i dont know.

Your sketchbook on CA has impressed and motivated me so much that after I'm done with my 3D bachelor degree I will also pick up the studying just as you did. Even though my employment will be in 3D animation, arts and design I still want to be freaking skilled at drawing as a personal goal. Hopefully one year from now I will show some good progress.

I'd like to hear you talk about how to keep so precise in your drawing. I mean keeping the silhouette is one thing, but keeping what's inside within perspective... Or is it just the lasso tool?

Do you do a 3D model and then paint over it? Or do you do it all by hand? Because all of the perspective is on key.
