Kiriban for Sho-kun - Steps by algenpfleger Kiriban for Sho-kun - Steps by algenpfleger
Final here! [link]
PSD file here! [link]

Here's some annotated steps for the mermaid fairy picture! I also included some 100% size crops to show how most of the stuff is really just a couple of brushstrokes =0

To the moral police: Yeah I know there's some boobs but I upload this to help beginners, most of which are minors, so if you flag this you basically say prudity is more important than helping out kids.

Thank you so much for posting your painting process to help out beginners like me. Artists like you are my inspiration to improve.

Your influence map was what made me curious to visit your gallery (especially that touching bit at the bottom where you have penguins, and life as your inspiration). I'm sure glad I visited! I'll start watching you now. I hope you keep your generous spirit through the years and continue posting your step-by-step pics! ;D

I try to do that with my work as well, posting regular WIPs in my art blog ([link]). Artists are definitely better off improving with one another, instead of being loners and keeping techniques secret! Again, thank you. ^^

Amazing like always.
May I ask one question? How did you vary the scales in width? Did you create a second brush with thinner scales or is there another solution for this ?
Thanks a lot for your great effort. I've almost watched every recently posted work and really learned something.
Hope we'll met some day in germany since I'm german by myself, haha ;)
Keep it up !

the thing I need to learn is how to make my own brush tips. If anyone's got a link to a nice tutorial, I'll be really thankful.

Just make a new document, like 200x200 px, paint in it, then select all and go to edit->make brush preset (it's called something like that).

I love all the tutorials and processes you post and I always find them so helpful, but what do you think of working in gray-scale first to get the values right?

:iconalgenpfleger:
algenpfleger Featured By Owner Apr 11, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
I think it's a terrible, terrible idea _ I used to try it from time to time and it fucks up the colors sooo bad. The thing is, when you work all in color, it's not like there's no value. But when you work only greyscale, you lose temperature, saturation and hue, and it always looks awkward if you put them in later, except for a very monochrome, desaturated image, but even there it will look weird because the brushstrokes and the colors don't match up.
