I'll just paste this from the other places i posted it:

Im afraid I started this mess by doubting the lack of a 3D reference here and I still do.
I do not doubt the talent of the artist however, since I've seen his other work and some of it is impressive. The mass of comments implying I lack talent or are simply jealous is surprising since the only thing I ever did was doubting the lack of references for a complicated piece like this. Seems this artist has a posse of followers who will defend him regardless :) That wont help him in the real world looking for work tho :)

I don't think using textures, reference, and 3d renders is 'cheating' as long as you call it what it is. If you took a beautiful photo it'd be art- but if you claimed you drew it, that'd be a problem don't you think?

Referenced or not I think it looks good. I just like to know what I'm looking at.

There are a bunch of posts saying that :iconalgenpfleger: is not doing his own art. I have been watching him for awhile now and have seen nothing but genius. The 'cheating' comment was intended as a humorous jab at anyone doubting him.

I don't think anyone is implying he's not doing his own art, at least not on this piece. I looked through the comments after hearing that people were talking shit. It looks like the only doubts are that it's actually a full on digital painting. While I don't doubt it's possible, it definitely looks more like a 3d render than a painting. It definitely looks like there are textures used. The .psd doesn't really prove there aren't, neither does the step-by-step. It doesn't show the painting process.

There's nothing wrong with using textures or rendering- it's its own artform, like I said above. The problem is the artist also says he doesn't use references. Inventing the layout of the room is certainly possible, but painting that wood grain without looking at a reference would be remarkable. Another poster explained that references are not a bad thing- everybody uses them. The artist continued to claim he never uses them and that he's just 'that good' or something. The story just seems a little odd.

Algenpfleger is certainly a good artist but I find it hard to believe this was entirely freehand painted, let alone with nothing as a reference.

I will say that I think the artist does paint the marble texture himself, he uses a brush set or something and layers the speckles and scratches. He makes the texture himself each time but I don't think he goes in and paints each individual bit of it, just like he uses gradients and whatnot.

Nothing wrong with that but it's not what people usually mean when they say 'digital painting,' so maybe it's a translation error. I think he's german.

I did notice that around.. fans coming and saying accusers of such things are jealous or untalented. The artist himself said it to me, so I'm not really surprised.

I don't understand why asking questions about how the piece was done causes such a shitstorm. In another comment somebody was attacked for asking what program he made this in.

I haven't been on dA in the last year or so but if this is how the 'community' is now I think I'll just stay away. It's just a bunch of whiny children who balk at anything that might be construed as criticism.

lol dude watch his livestream he shows you that every thing in the entire painting is his own work. For textures he makes a new image, paints his own pattern (by hand) then converts it into a brush. EVERYTHING is his. If you watched his livestream you'd notice that. He doesn't use any photo texturing.
