I do art for a living and wish I'd learned a proper job. Crap clients, crap money, crap hours. Should have gone into business.

I had to do a lot of furry porn to pay the bills recently. I think I understand prostitutes a little bit better now, haha. But every now and then I get what you'd call "a good gig", which to me is like licking blood. I'll keep on doing this bullshit until I'm able to work on nothing but serious industry jobs. There is always hope!

I took a look at your gallery and I was surprised you had to do furry porn (I hope you were joking, now I'm kinda curious) because you seem very skilled.

Thank you, but yeah. You do what you gotta do to pay the bills. Some people are willing to pay a lot of dough to see their sexual fetishes illustrated

Unfortunately my family pushed me to attend the wrong high school and I've not studied art.. and then, with a useless high school qualification, I had to study at university so now I also have a useless degree :D
So, now that I'm 24 and after two years looking for a job I've not found, I'm going to attend an illustration course (3 years and a diploma) and I seriously hope to find a job related to what I studied.. once in a life =3=

I'm well on my way to doing it.

"Art" is rather broad. Boundless, even. As for me, between the Performing Arts [acting], Music [ghost writing, producing], Fashion Design, Communication Design and Drawing on the side, I have plans on becoming anywhere between Rich and blue-blooded Wealthy. With fame likely being a direct consequence of my future course of actions.

"Art" is the word I like to use to describe myself and what I find worthwhile about life [aside from God himself]. So it makes all the sense in the world that I pursue the facets of art that I've been gifted for and the aspects of art that give me biggest high; the ones that I find most entertaining.

And achieving great success as I follow my dreams - that's killing 2 birds with 1 stone. It's the icing on the cake, if not more.

I feel like artists, actors, writers and musicians are all in the same boat. Always the same questions: conventional education yes/no? Putting all your eggs in one basket? Are you good enough? Selling out? When should you admit to yourself that it doesn't work and better adopt another approach? And the same strange reactions from society: If you don't make it, you're a loser and everyone knew it all along. If you make it, you're badass and everyone knew it all along :D

In the past I only thought of being paid to do art as freelancing, which doesn't seem to be a secure option, so for all of my life I wished to be in the medical field, doing art as a side job. But now that I'm older things have changed slightly. I would like to do graphic design and commercials but something seems to be pulling me towards the military instead. In the past I would've never seen myself being how I am today.

I was laid off awhile ago, so I'm about to start commissions, and maybe I'll make a store on Etsy selling designs .... I really need the money haha ;;;
I'm hoping I can have both as long as possible. Have a part time job, and be a part time commissioner !!

Well on my way to doing it! If not for a living, at the very least as additional income; I've started doing commissions recently, and I'm also beginning to advertize and network more locally at conventions and the like.
I also enjoy storytelling in general, so if not straight-up illustration, I'd also love to start making money from webcomics, print comics, and possibly even literature.

I study IT since I don't think I will be able to support myself on art alone. Maybe I will end up designing GUIs or simply stick with webdesign since its becoming clear I'm no good with programming.

Does working in vfx still count as art for a living? Honestly I wouldn't mind doing your thing and just going off and freelancing. Maaaan, a 9-5 job seriously cuts away at your will to draw...

Does writing count as art or just drawing? Because I want to be a writer and an essayist more than I would like to be a digital drawer for money. But that's just me.

It depends on your own definition of what art is.
I personally count writing as a art.. through a form of stringing words and text to create this final product of a sentence. Then you proceed to string sentences together.. it just comes out as beautiful!
That is art to me. That stringing and effort to create something of your own -- an expression of your vision of the world.

Das junge Leute VOR einem Beruf kein Geld haben checkt irgendwie niemand.

Woher soll man noch ohne Abschluss sein eigenes Leben finanzieren? Nix mit Volljährigkeit und ab ins Leben. :/

Immerhin bleibt Zeit zum zeichnen üben...

Have a different means of income but sometimes get commissions and I'm quite content. I wouldn't want to do this every day, so I'm happy with a little bit of both.

I'm three months away from a BFA in illustration, and I've learned that this is a fucking tough gig. Those who can make it in the art business and make a living doing it are few and far between. A lot of big-name professional illustrators have day jobs (if they're lucky, as illustration professors or art directors), and I'm probably going to have one until the day I die, doing this on the side.

I've worked as a commercial artist from 1979 to 2009. Am in the SDCC industry/pro registry since 1994. I've paid my bills and rent with it for decades however your income can change month to month/year to year with regularity and this looks bad when trying to buy a house. I have a sudden new family so I needed a regular better income so I left the field. To all my fellows here... Salutes and good fortune to you all.

Despite encouragement from professors and parents, I don't think I want art to be my full time career. So far I have settled on teaching it in high school and seeing how that goes. Someday I might start tattooing.

Last summer I moved into a house and started paying bills and going to MCAD WHILE freelancing illustration in order try to pay for my living expenses. Sooo glad I'm out of school, because I really learned what it was like living as a starving artist, really up to this point since last August.

I've had to ask my parents for a steady flow of money- which is really humiliating in the pursuit of wanting to remain independent. I've been able to pay my bills and some groceries with a long term gig that lasted for about five months, and now it's nearing completion. I do a lot of comic art, and recently, picked up a new job where I actually have a page rate. I'm excited about it, but what I really care more about is seeing if I get called back on that full-time janitorial position. I love what I do, but also love having food in my belly. If I can remain dependent on a job that will keep me fueled to do art every other day and the whole weekend, I can be happy.

I have to remain optimistic. At the same time, I have to think honestly everyday.

"I do art for a living and wish I'd learned a proper job..."

Perfect option!
Very clever to put this one. It described my situation better than I would have done, and also in a funny way. I would have written something way too melodramatic. But I am also glad to see that very few people have chosen this one.
I am doing everything I can to move away from this area. I'd love to make art only as a hobby.
I was really a young naive fool.
...
You see, melodramatic. =D

I'm getting closer and closer to choosing a major for college, as much as I love art. I have a giant fear that the art community will reject my type of anime-based art. I'd like to double major and try to find out what I would want from that point on.

I'm somewhere between "I do something else for a living and quite content" and "... wish I'd given art a shot." I don't think I'd be good as a professional artist, but I'd like to have more art as part of what I do (which is mostly writing and editing focused). I'd like a synthesis of what I currently do and art.
